What is a snowsuit?

The best way to protect a baby from the cold is undoubtedly with a snowsuit. This all-in-one outerwear covers your baby from head to toe. The main advantage of a snowsuit is its full-length zipper, making it incredibly convenient to put on and take off, especially when your baby is asleep. It also comes with built-in booties and mittens, and its hood provides full head coverage. It’s important to choose a snowsuit with a warm lining and a waterproof outer layer, like this water-resistant Timberland snowsuit with removable mittens and booties. As for temperatures, we recommend dressing your baby in a snowsuit when the thermometer reads below 12°C (54°F).

Snowsuit: What age is it for?

For babies born in winter, a snowsuit is perfect right from the hospital discharge. But until what age is a snowsuit recommended? It is generally advised until at least the first birthday, or even up to two years old.Once your little one starts walking, switching to a coat or puffer jacket is preferable, as it allows for greater freedom of movement. Before that, you can size up on the snowsuit for extra comfort. As for dressing your baby under a snowsuit, the layering technique is best. Start with a full bodysuit, followed by warm pants and a long-sleeve t-shirt, then finish with a thick cardigan, socks, and a beanie. This way, your baby stays warm while making it easy to remove layers in heated places.

When to Choose a Coat?

Easier to put on, a coat is ideal from one year old and when temperatures are milder. It’s particularly practical for frequent car trips, as it’s easier to remove than a snowsuit. However, it is often slightly less warm. If you opt for a coat for your baby in winter, consider adding a stroller footmuff and completing the outfit with a beanie, mittens, and a scarf. Ideally, choose a waterproof hooded coat, like the faux-fur-lined puffer jackets from Carrément Beau. On rainy but mild days, a lighter raincoat is a great choice. If it’s sunny but still chilly, a knitted coat will be your best ally. Regardless of your choice, always remember to remove your baby’s coat or snowsuit before placing them in a car seat. This ensures both comfort and, more importantly, safety. In freezing weather, simply cover your little one with a cozy wool and cotton blanket.
